Character Design - Weight Lift Toss - Baca Jakub and Lala

First assignment for character design! Design the character for our animation exercise - Weight Lift Toss.

My character is called Baca Jakub (baca means sheep herder in Polish Highlander slang), and his sheep, Lala.

Now I'm off to do a crazy amount of thumbnails to figure out my animation! :D So excited!

So here are my Weight Lift Toss poses:

And Here is Baca Jakub sneezing - for an in class exercise!

Took a while to figure him out! Here is some exploration:

Animation - 24 hr film

So I took part in a 24 hour film with classmates from Sheridan. It was exhausting - and a bit crazy. Although it was fun - I don't think I can ever do this again! I value sleep way too much.

The subject was: Interpret the quote from Orwell's "Animal Farm" : "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".

It was a tough subject, so our story could have been stronger. In the end, we had to go with something, so here it is!

I got to animate the pig! Animation done in Flash, bg's in Photoshop.

So here is "V.I.P." - by Team Texmex -

Painting - Outdoor Scape - Studies

First real project for Painting this year at Sheridan. The theme was very broad. Outdoors!

I decided to go with a pine forest, like the kind I loved horseback riding in back in Poland. Ah, nostalgia.

Here are my tonal studies:

And here are my color comps! Still not sure which one I'll go with.

Painting - Tonal Exercise

Back to painting! We got an in class exercise - we got a ready made layout, and hand to make a quick black and white tonal thumbnail sketch of it. For the larger format we were allowed to render it either in black and white or in color.

Just for fun, I did mine in color! Gouache on Watercolor Paper. Again, not my design! Just fun with paints.

And here is my rough tonal thumb

Animation - Wave Boat Sack

Back to Sheridan Animation exercises!

Here is my Wave Boat Sack. I think I could still fiddle a bit more with the wave - but I'm too tired.
I can see that a whole summer focousing on VFX really did help me with my splash.

Here it is! Good ol' pencil on paper:

Storyboard - The Good Little Girl - Exploration

And here is Poem #2 -

THE GOOD LITTLE GIRL

There was a little girl, who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forhead.
When she was good, she was very, very good;
But when she was bad...she was horrid!

So my character for this storyboard will be Kit Kurlz (a nod to my hatred of the font) and her pony Calamity.

Here is some early exploration!

Storyboard - A Mistake - Exploration

Back to Sheridan for year 2. First storyboard assignment. We have to interpret 2 poems in boards, and create our own custom character lineups for each. Here is poem 1:

A MISTAKE

He said he wanted pest control,
And so I brought him this.
It escaped.
So I was blamed
For the resulting mess.

We got it back, it lives here now,
One of our special guests.
But there is still one problem:
It doesn't scare the pests!

So my idea is set in the Ice Age. A young boy brings his Granddad a Wooly Mammoth to get rid of the mice... turns out the Mammoth is scared of mice. But in the end, Mice, Woolly, Boy and even Granddad life peacefully all together.

So far I'm working on exploratory work for the characters. Sketch dump! Tomorrow I'll work on a more solid lineup. At first I toyed with the idea of the wife bringing home Woolly, but thought the boy would be funnier:
